Diamond
Diamond is formed under high pressure 50 miles or more underground.
The hardest mineral on Earth, with its exceptional lustre and brilliant fire, makes it the most highly prized of all gems.

Diamonds are graded on the 4 C's

Colour: Diamonds can be found in a wide spectrum of colours from yellowish brown up to the very rare diamonds described as colourless and are graded from D (the best) to Z (the worst)

Cut: The cut has the greatest influence on the diamonds fire and brilliance. A round brilliant-cut diamond has 58 facets. When a diamond is well cut it will allow the light to be reflected back into the eye of the observer. Stones that appear dull or lifeless are usually poorly cut.

Clarity: Most diamonds contain inclusions of non-crystallized carbon. Most of these are not apparent to the naked eye but can be seen under magnification. A perfect stone will have no visible inclusions when magnified with a 10x lens. The least sought after will have many or large inclusions visible with the naked eye.

Carat Weight: A carat weight is a unit of weight and not size as most people think. If a stone is well cut then a specific weight should equate to a certain size. There are 100 points to a full carat and are normally expressed as 0.025ct which would be classed as ¼ of a carat.

Diamond is the Birth Stone for April.
