For ten years, the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) terrorized Sierra Leone. The rebel army hacked off limbs, massacred, raped and tortured the civilian population. Child soldiers with AK47s and drug-glazed eyes committed countless atrocities. At the heart of the war lay Sierra Leone's diamonds.

Sierra Leone and other diamond-rich African countries have been torn apart as armed groups fight for control of diamonds. Rebel armies buy their weapons of war with funds from diamond sales. These diamonds, known as "blood diamonds" or "conflict diamonds" are later sold to unsuspecting consumers as symbols of love and romance.
